Fix the machinery of your life . . . and serenity and wealth will follow.

Starkly compelling in its simplicity, in The Systems Mindset Managing the Machinery of Your Life, Sam Carpenter expands on the core inspirational element of his business bestseller, Work the System The Simple Mechanics of Making More and Working Less, now in its third edition.

Mindset is your path to quickly breaking free to making a small tweak in how you see your world and then using that more accurate vision to get what you’ve always wanted from work, relationships, and health.

When the systems mindset epiphany strikes, you will instantly see the visible and invisible machinery that determines your existence. With this startling new perception, you’ll see that your world is not a confusing array of sights, sounds, and events and, instead, grasp that it’s a simple and logical collection of systems, systems that can be quickly adjusted to deliver the life results you’ve always wanted.

You will never be the same.

...and it was time well spent. And my time is very valuable. Sam's view of the world ("it's working 99.9% correctly all the time") is highly empowering. Systems thinking is a system itself, of course, but it's also a way of viewing the world. That's what this book is really about - viewing the world in a Systems Mindset.

I don't think you can immerse yourself too much in this. Immersion is vital to embracing this, because it's a whole different way of viewing the world.

Sam inspired everyone in my company to ask a million dollar question:

"What system, if repaired or set in motion, would have prevented this problem from happening in the first place?"

Systems action is the discipline to ask this question and then do the work to build the system.

There is a sense in which I disagree with Sam; specifically, a huge part of the world is "chaos theory" and "black swan events" (things nobody could have ever predicted) and "butterfly effect." It's impossible to accurately predict the weather more than 3 weeks in advance, for example. All you can have is a system for dealing with a hurricane. You can't predict when or where the hurricane is going to show up.

That's a fact of life and it pushes against the effectiveness of systems. But it doesn't change the fact that many things in the world are repeatable and reliable and run mechanically. And probably 2/3rds of your business can run exactly that way.

Thanks, Sam, for espousing a powerful view of the world.

The Systems Mindset Managing the Machinery of Your Life eBook Sam Carpenter Reviews

I found this book to have some very useful points, however I think it did get repetitive and also made some big statements that I tend to disagree with.
While there are definitely very valid and helpful elements addressed in this book, I find it a little too black & white and restrictive in its views.
The general and most vital information holds validity, yet various statements tend to represent views of the author with little evidence to back them up.
There is value to be taken from this book that can definitely be applied to various aspects of life and business, however I would not consider it an absolute game changer for me. More some good advice to make some practical improvements.
On the plus side, it is easy to read and to absorb the content within. Practical changes to be made should be fairly simple to recognise implement, although some discipline in certain areas will be required and that comes down to the individual. There is no magic wand that will do the work for you. This book however, may well guide you to recognise where changes can be made to help various aspects of your life and/or business function more efficiently.
Currently reading it and I'm finding it both challenging in a good way, and welcome to know about it's point of view.
The book starts by telling us that technology is disturbing our happiness and ability to concentrate and control our world. Fine. I agree. Then I continued reading to see what solutions the author recommended. Several chapters in and still nothing actionable. I gave up around chapter seven. Too much time describing machinery. This could have been done in one or two chapters. So acting in the spirit of the book, I am taking control of the rest of my evening and choosing not to proceed with this book.
great read. Helps to get into the system mentality.
Loved this book. Burned through it in a few days. Started really looking at how my machines are currently functioning.
I have enormous respect for Sam Carpenter. He learned his lesson the hard way, after years of personal struggle. In a moment of crisis, he had an insight that changed his life, and he shares his simple insight with every person who is open to it. His insight came from a simple change in perspective. He saw that every aspect of life works according to systems and subsystems that operate according to their own logic.
By systematically examining the systems that govern your life, you can gain control over them, and change the results that those systems create in your life.

His first book dealt with gaining control over the systems that control how businesses operate, and showed managers and owners how to design better processes for better results. This book applies that same methodology to your personal life, and shows how your personal life can be systematically improved by tinkering with the your existing system and routines. As you gain greater control over the processes that govern your life, you experience less turbulence, since your improved systems will make it less likely that the details of your life (paying your bills, putting gas in your car, or keeping in touch with old friends, etc.) will go off course.
